🇺🇸 🚀 The DC-X or Delta Clipper Experimental was a 1/3rd scale prototype of a single stage to orbit reusable vertical landing rocket developed by McDonnell Douglas. It was comprised of purely commercially available parts and only cost $60 million (1991 value) to develop.
This was incredibly forward thinking for the time. The program was transferred to NASA who immediately sidelined it and wrapped its staff in bureaucracy. One of its fuel tanks would rupture on landing in 1996. Instead of spending the the few tens of millions to rebuild it and continue testing NASA opted to abandon it. Then proceeded to dump $922 Million into the Venture Star spaceplane concept that went absolutely nowhere.
